What is NIE?
Newspaper in Education (NIE) - an international program linking schools, businesses and newspapers - helps students meet the challenges of the future. Through NIE, teachers use the newspaper to enhance lessons. The Journal Star NIE program provides lesson plans; curriculum guides, student workbooks, and teacher workshops to help teachers successfully use the newspaper in their classroom.

NIE at the Journal Star
The Journal Star is committed to the future of central Illinois. Newspaper in Education is part of that commitment. NIE is an established program with over thirty years service to central Illinois students and their teachers. The first NIE administrator was Sallie Whelan, who began the program in the early 1960's. After developing a core curriculum, teacher guides, and supplementary materials, she saw the program grow tremendously over two decades. Currently, the NIE program is a job-share, with two coordinators who strive to continue Sallie's dedication to central Illinois education. NIE now delivers over 30,000 newspapers each month in fourteen counties throughout central Illinois.

Newspaper in Education Provides:

  • Classroom subscriptions for approximately 300 teachers and over 8,000 central Illinois students each week. NIE underwrites the program, and newspapers are offered to schools at 22 cents per copy.
  • Corporate and individual sponsors to help schools pay the remaining subscription cost.
  • Free staff development for teachers.
  •  Up-to-date, newspaper-based curriculum material for all subjects and grade levels. Teacher guides, student workbooks, and other curriculum are always offered at no charge.
  • Classroom speakers, volunteers, resource people, and facility tours for teachers and their students.
