PEORIA — Matt Brucker didn't need braggadocio, he just needed to know how to spell it.

Braggadocio, or empty boasting, was one of two words the 11-year-old spelled correctly Thursday at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The Journal Star-sponsored speller from Dahinda was in Washington, D.C., at the Grand Hyatt Washington when he spelled his round 2 and 3 words correctly. Unfortunately, Matt's score, combined with Wednesday's round 1 score, did not qualify him to continue to the semifinals round Friday morning.

PEORIA — This year was not the first time Amy Brucker used the Spell It! word list as a convenient resource to teach her kids.

However, it is the first year her son Matt spelled his way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Spell It! is the study guide for the City of Peoria Spelling Bee. Two weeks after winning that bee, the 11-year-old Dahinda boy triumphed at the Journal Star Grand Final Spelling Bee on March 19. He outspelled 13 other local students, but getting to the capital was never his or Amy's original goal.

EAST PEORIA — Correct spelling of the word "getatable" was quite attainable for seventh-grader Preeti Subramaniyan as she sped through the letters of the final word in the Journal Star Peoria County Spelling Bee.

As champion of that competition, Preeti, a student at Dunlap Middle School, advances to the Grand Final Spelling Bee next weekend, which also will be held at the WEEK-TV studio in East Peoria. Her county spelling bee victory was taped Friday and aired Saturday on Channel 25.

EAST PEORIA — Sixth-grader Matt Brucker may be a winner, and he undoubtedly deserves a vacation.

But while he's enjoying the sights at the Grand Canyon this week, he'll also continue to quiz himself and be grilled on words most people can't even pronounce.

The 11-year-old Dahinda boy has emerged the champion in the Journal Star City of Peoria Spelling Bee and thus earned the right to try again in two weeks at the Grand Final Spelling Bee. The city bee, which is open to champion spellers from each school in the city of Peoria as well as home-schoolers from the Journal Star's readership area, was taped Friday and aired Saturday on WEEK-TV, Channel 25.
