The Torch is jammed with gamesome articles that showcase these journalists’ talents for capturing the quirks and interests of their high school audience.

Although many of The Torch’s features are pithy and delightful, the “Contending Cousins” printed here received the most votes for being originally clever. Monthly features also worth noting for brevity are “Heap of the Month” and “Locker Raiders.”

Check out these genius journalists on the web at www.olympia.org.

Contending Cousins Fight Over Car

By Cody and Jacob Litwiller

I don’t even know what a “Prix” is and why it is self-declared “Grand.”
J: It is not self-declared “Grand.” Do you self-declare yourself “Cody?” No! Your folks did. Did the Grand Prix self declare itself grand? No! Besides, I haven’t gotten in trouble with the law for a taillight malfunction.
C: It was a kind gesture from a member of the law to notify me of my ill fated taillight. Nothing to do with trouble.
J: Well, too bad I haven’t had any problems with my car. I have a spotless record. My car is pretty much perfect.
C: Congratulations on jinxing yourself and I guess we’ll have to settle this at the Christmas tree.

This month we decided to argue about a topic that affects each of us everyday, our vehicles.
C: This morning when I was admiring the “cool blue” tint of my Cougar, I thought of how boring your white Grand Prix is.
J: Did you count the rust spots?
C: The majority of the car is “cool blue.”
J: Well, my car has no rust spots. The paint is in very good condition. I noticed your car didn’t start the other day.
C: Yea, sometimes the Cougar likes to sleep-in more than I do, but once it starts to purr there’s not an earthly object that can stop it.
J: Uh huh…Is that what your mom told you when she was driving you to school the other day?
C: Yes, that was my mom, and she is an excellent chauffeur when my Cougar takes the day off.
