What is NIE?
Newspaper in Education (NIE) is an international program linking schools, businesses and newspapers. It helps students meet the challenges of the future. Students today will compete at a global level for future jobs and the newspaper serves as an ever changing live text book that keeps us informed of world wide current events.
Through NIE, teachers use the newspaper to enhance lessons. The Journal Star NIE program provides online curriculum and teacher guides to help teachers successfully use the newspaper and e-journal star in their classroom.

NIE at the
Journal Star
The Journal Star is committed to the future of central Illinois. Newspaper in Education is part of that commitment. NIE is an established program with over fifty years service to central Illinois students and their teachers. The first NIE administrator was Sallie Whelan, who began the program in the early 1960's. After developing a core curriculum, teacher guides, and supplementary materials, she saw the program grow tremendously over two decades. Currently, Tracey Gerard oversees the NIE program. We are ever changing with the times and now provide schools with both printed copies as well as online access to our e-journal star, which is an exact replica of the printed copy.
Newspaper in Education Provides:
- Classroom subscriptions for approximately 250 teachers. Journal Star underwrites the program, and newspapers are offered to schools at just $.22 a copy.
- Corporate and individual sponsors to help schools absorb the remaining subscription cost.
- Online access to the NIE Institute, which allows an NIE teacher to access and download hundreds of curriculum links and teacher guides in every grade or subject.
- Online access to the e-Journal Star, which enables students to view articles in different languages and search archived articles by topic or region.
- Annual Graduation inserts featuring our local high school graduates.
- The annual Scripps National Spelling Bee competitions, which are televised on WEEKTV in March every year. Our champion and parent enjoy an all expense paid trip to Washington DC to compete in the National Competition.
